Little Otik, also known as Greedy Guts, is a 2000 Czech dark comedy surreal horror drama film by Jan Švankmajer and Eva Švankmajerová. Based on the folktale Otesánek by K.J. Erben, the film is a comedic live action, stop motion-animated feature film set mainly in an apartment building in the Czech Republic. The film uses the Overture to Der Freischutz by Carl Maria von Weber as the score.
Like many Disney films, Little Otik is based on a classic European folktale, but while Disney cleans these stories up into candy-coloured moral fables ready to be adapted into breakfast cereals ...
Otik isn't a cute little Pinocchio, though, it's a monster that shatters his "mother's" mind and takes over the Horaks' lives. The little girl next door, Alzbetka somehow becomes the narrator and muse of the story. She controls the story twards the end, and sets the stage for the fairy-tale finish - but don't look for a "happily ever after."
He's actually an excellent live-action director as well, which Little Otik (in Czech "Otesanek," "Greedy Guts," the name of an Eastern European fairy tale from which the script is adapted) demonstrates.

Little Otik, as with his recent works Alice and Faust, combines and benefits from these elements in sum. There is an inherent humor to the premise (several scenes elicit unforeseen laughter), though there is a concrete desperation at the heart of Little Otik. The central family, cursed (literally) with impotence, manifests a child with sheer ...
